this is definitely a FAQ.

i migrated from a redhat5.1 distribution to debian2.1 and have had
no problems with unknown "isms."
one problem i have encountered is that a soundblaster16 that worked
GREAT under redhat5.1 doesn't work at all under debian2.1; i've
tried as many kernel/module tricks people have thought of, to no
avail. this is actually a big problem for me.
one thing that i found different and trvial is that there
is no /etc/rc.local, but instead there is /etc/rc.boot/,
which is a dir that you can link to scripts in that get
executed on boot. i guess you could just put a script called rc.local
in there if you wanted.
debian's packaging system is pretty well respected. there is a tool
called apt, apt-get is kind of like a networked rpm, apt-get will
go out and find the latest (stable or unstable, you pick) deb for
a certain program, get it and install it. it's pretty handy if you like
packaging systems.
with debian it's much easier to contribute your code to their distribution,
if you're into that sort of thing.
i'm a big debian fan now, my box is so clean and organized thus more
stable and dependable, i just have no sound - which sucks.
