I'm up late tonight at work. I'm a bit tired and grumpy and you
just hit on one of my pet peeves. So now I'm going to rant. (but only
briefly - I have real work to do)
Why in the world would you require a linux person to submit a
document in a microsoft proprietary document format requiring the use
and ownership of a certain microsoft proprietary operating system. As
a linux person myself, I don't have a microsoft cripled machine and
neither does a good portion of the more dedicated and knowledgable
linux people on the list.
Do you really want to alienate the top candidates right away? Don't
you think they are all laughing saying "HaHaHa! Microsoft Word?
Yeah, right - next company!"
I've seen several companies do this and it just bugs me. Requiring
documents to be in any proprietary non-open format is not the sign of
a company able to make intelligent decisions about technolgy.
Requiring them for people who are likely to have a natural aversion to
the that proprietary format and the proprietary system which is
required to run it is just plain dumb.
Ok - back to work... :)
