you're probably specifying ppp support as a module but
failing to actually compile the module.  before the 
'make bzImage' part of the kernel dance do:
make modules
make modules_install
you'll see that this slaps the new modules in /lib/modules/<version>/*

now, about the meeting, i have someone who's willing to
give a presentation about security and cryptography next
sunday, march 19th.  does this sound good?
