Justin,
Linux Samba works fine as a file server for W2k. I use smbpasswd and turn
on encryption in /etc/smb.conf. Two clues, though; all samba users must be
valid users on the fileserver (although their Samba password doesn't
have to match their local one); and the example smb.conf files are a LOT
easier to follow than the man page.
