I have a pretty fresh install of Mandrake 7 from a downloaded image (==RH 6.1, I
think), and I have several quick questions:
When downloading bttv, xawtv, etc, as a user, in what directory should I download
and unpack the tarballs and then (as root) install? It seems that the /home/myuser/
dir is not appropriate, I'm sure /usr/local/ or some such is the standard dir.
Also, several programs have not installed properly seemingly because they were
unpacked in the /home/myuser/ dir.
When I unpack bttv-0.64... in the /home/myuser/bttv/ directory and then `make`
and `make ins`, I get an error:
insmod videodev
./videodev.o: unresolved symbol init_bttv_cards
./videodev.o: unresolved symbol i2c_tuner_init
make: *** [ins] Error 1
Before this, I have no error in `make`.
Another question: when I login at the console as root and then start kdm,
and I have a graphical login, how can I get back to the console? It seems
I can only login to X, shutdown X, shutdown and restart, or restart X, but
not exit the X login and get back to root console. Any tips?
Also: in KDE as a user, I cannot access the KDE screensaver settings module,
nor does the KDE screensaver work. Note that when I log into KDE as root
user, the screensaver module and screensaver work flawlessly. Any tips?
Thanks!
