I believe that if you have the local mailer enabled (which you almost
certainly do, unless you are running a nullclient configuration), the
aliases file is mandatory.
By the way, the new sendmail 8.10 installed for me with 0.0000 difficulty
under Red Hat 6.1. I built it from the source at ftp.sendmail.org.
