Try either IceWM, Blackbox, or XFCE. Any of these are full-featured,
fast, and pretty easy on CPU/memory. As far as functionality, I install
the gtk, gtk+ and Qt libraries, so I can run Gnome & KDE apps without the
weight of running Gnome or KDE. OpenWindows is kinda slow & ugly for my
taste. With Ice, Blackbox or XFCE, you should see some definite gains in
speed.
