Subject: e-mail virus info & SigLinux
Doc,
I'm writing to you because SigLinux won't let me post (for some
unkonwn reason), but I'd appreciate it if you'd mention to the list
that not all people out there are stupid. Photodex (I) forbade use of
Outlook Express when it came out because of the Active-X support, and
I received a LOT of flack in the process (I was regularly called
paranoid.) We regularly disable all Active-everything and cannot use
several major pieces of software (which would otherwise be convenient
and more cost effective than our alternatives.)
Also, my professional opinion as a rebuttal to the guy's post about it
not being as much Microsoft's fault as anything else is: "BULLSHIT."
Microsoft must hold itself accountable for knowingly providing
dangerously exploitable software to hundreds of millions of desktops
around the world. They knew these security holes were there in the
early 90's when they came up with most of the automatic OLE notions.
They were quite wrong then and they are quite wrong now. I was there,
and I saw it happen.
None of Photodex was affected by this virus as a direct result of our
policies about Active-X, which have been in place for YEARS. Many
otherwise good companies are currently debiltated because of their
'not worrying about it', and passively entrusting an organization like
Microsoft with their internet safety.
In my personal and professional opinion, Microsoft is a criminal
organization because of grossly irresponsible decisions made to
outpace their more responsible competitors in the market. I praise
the efforts of the Linux community to do something about it, because
very few other factions have the balls to do anything but sit around
and bitch about it.
Best Regards,
