I assume by firewall you also mean masquerading/NAT. This will happen w/
all masq'd sockets that are idle for > n minutes. You can change these
parameters (n) w/ ipchains -M -S something something. It is basically so
that if you don't properly close a socket the masquerader doesn't run out
of ports.
