I know this is a little off topic for a linux list, but
have you ever had different operating systems react in really odd
ways to the exact same hardware (and I don't mean something potentially
troublesome like a vid card, just completely ordinary things like a mouse
or a plain ATA hard drive)? I had enough spare parts come together, plus
a little (<$10) money at goodwill computerworx to build a box to screw
around with, try out various different OSes I've been meaning to use, that
sort of thing. All the components are completely standard stuff (atx mb,
p233, plain pc66 sdram, ps2 mouse/kb, ati xpert 98 agp card, udma33/ata
2.5 hd, standard floppy, standard cd-rom, etc. etc.). (The mb is a minor
name MB but uses a very common reference super7 chipset.)
Solaris 8 (x86) sometimes refuses to recognize the drive at all,
and when it does, it throws about 100 disk access errors before fdisk
dies. So I can't even install that.
FreeBSD (4 and 3.3) install and work fine...except neither version
could deal with the mouse (tried both a M$ intellimouse and a plain 2
button generic ps/2). The mouse pointer goes thisway and thatway and
buttons randomly press themselves (XF86Setup), even when I'm not
touching the mouse. This happpens with both raw mouse access and with
moused (the FreeBSD analog to gpm I gather). So X doesn't work, and just
a GUI kinda guy... (well, GUI + 8 or so xterms. :) )
Linux (RedHat 6.2 and Slackware 4) all install and
operate with zero problem, as does win98SE and win200 pro (haven't tried
NT4 yet).
I think some OSes are just (naturally booOOorn) born to be bad.
( c.f. natural born killers Mallory in cell scene)
On a side note they have like 3 copies of Solaris 2.5.1 x86 at
half price for 19.95.
Does anybody have any clues about the solaris disk or freeBSD
mouse wackiness?
        Mike
