Hi guys. Thanks for the all the responses! I really learned from them. I finally fixed the problem -- it was very simple: The IRQ for my eth1 card seems to conflict with some other devices in the system. The card can still be detected and the network eth1 can be started. But after that, the card cannot really communicate with others ... I changed the settings and it works now! :) Thanks again for all the help!
