.tgz file + calendar/scheduler in Debian

Sorry to sound dumb here but I've never seen a compressed file for 
solaris that ends with .tgz 
I tried
  $ tar -xvzf filename.tgz
on SunOS tupi.cs.utexas.edu 5.7 Generic_106541-09 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-1

Also I am wondering if there is a calendar/scheduler in Debian that I can
use as a reminder.
