I would definitely give it a shot, heatsink compound is only a couple of
bucks at your nearest radioshack.
But the thing is, metal on metal is better than metal on compund on metal,
so you want as little as you can get away with (just enough to fill the
cracks). Apply some to both the proc and the orb, then scrape each surface
with the edge of a razor (or some other very flat surface) to make sure it
is only sitting in the little grooves and imperfections.
If your fans are really loud, and you are worried about temp, you might try
keeping the case open but wiring your fans to run at 7 volts instead of
twelve. The wires on your power cables are
red_black_black_yellow
which translates into
+5_Ground_Ground_+12
So if you rig your fans with +12 as the positive terminal and +5 as the
negative terminal, there is a 7 volt difference. I have done it myself, and
it works great (I added a switch to be able to switch back to 12 volts for
extended gaming sessions which really heat up my box). If you want any tips
just let me know.

ps - compund with better heat transfer characteristics (than what they sell
at radioshack) can be had, but it gets expensive quick (arctic silver
thermal grease, about $15 for a tube) and is usually only needed for extreme
applications involving things like peltiers and water cooling (drool...).
