I recently re-installed slack on a particular machine, only to find
that ATA33 is no longer enabled on startup - making my primary disk, an
IBM 9.1GB (ATA66) as slow as my PIO4 drives on ide1.
Previously on startup, I would see:
----
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
...
hda: IBM-DJNA-370910, 8693MB w/1966kB Cache, CHS=1108/255/63, UDMA(33)
... ^^^^^^
----
Now I'm seeing:
----
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:pio, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
...
hda: IBM-DJNA-370910, 8693MB w/1966kB Cache, CHS=1108/255/63
---- ^^^^^^
Everything was working fine before I wiped the disk out. Have tried using
the same kernel (2.2.17) with same IDE patch (dated Sep 2000), 2.2.18 +
IDE patch and 2.4.0 without any luck. I'm thinking maybe something is
wrong with the disk controller now? hdparm hasn't helped any, either.
