my 2 cents:
                firewall: 486dx-2/66 - p90 class.  3c509b isa nics are
                          usually like $8 at goodwill computerworks. 16 to
                          32 of ram is more than enough.
                web/ftp/mail: depends on how many hits you're counting on
                              and what sort of web stuff you plan on
                              running.  but probably something in the p150
                              to ppro200 range would do great for this,
                              figure 32 - 128 ram.  (128 if you plan on
                              running a bunch of server-side scripts
                              and/or a lightweight database like
                              msql/mysql/postgresql).  anything pII-ish
                              is probably overkill.

        local cheap computers and parts:
                goodwill computer store on 183 an ohlen (iirc)
                www.used-pcs.com (cedar park)

        wrt the firewall, seriously look into openbsd.  firewalling is way
nice, better than linux by a good margin IMHO.
