Try adding in the driver section: Option "noaccel"
and restart X. You also might want to check if the ATI Mach64 framebuffer console is being used. If that is so, then disable it in the kernel compilation. ATI console framebuffer consoles and X have been known to conflict with each other. With Mach64 variants such as the Rage LT Pro, having the ATI Mach64 framebuffer console and X running at the same times causes lockups during VT switches.
