As somebody else mentioned, -J is Joliet.  It's Microsoft's extension
that gives you long file names and perhaps NTFS file permissions (not
sure about the last part.)

Are there a whole buttload of small files on the original CD?  The
extensions basically cause it to store more metadata for each file, so
if so, that could explain it.

If you give mkiosfs the -v flag, it'll give more info, and I believe
that one of the things it'll give is how many blocks are devoted to
extensions.

I've heard that older versions of Linux will corrupt an iso9660 file
if mounted via the loopback device, and so if you burn it to CD
afterwards that it won't work.  I can't remember where I read this,
however -- but I do think it's been fixed.
