well, I went out and bought a Matrox G450 dualhead because of they actually have a Linux support employee in their forums. 2d-wise this has proven true, the performance is good and the image is better than my Geforce 2 MX. dualhead with monitors is a cinch with their free (source+cost) 'powerdesk' utility for merged, xinerama, or seperate desktops. I have come across problems in 3d though (quake3), and my understanding is that XFree 4.2.0 fixes them. My only real complaint since I don't need to be playing games is that the G450 and G550 don't support tv-out for some reason (most likely the f'n macrovision), but the G400 does, seems like they should add it to new cards first. I think MPlayer has a workaround for this (including disabling macrovision, not that it matters to me) that involves an extra kernel module or something, I'll try it when I have the time.
Ok, now to the question: Does anyone have unofficial XFree86 4.2 packages for Debian? I can't believe unstable is still on 4.1. Or, how do I place a hold on all XF86 packages so I can install 4.2.0 from source and not screw it up with apt-get upgrade?
