Here is my problem:

I have a flat screen monitor. Unfortunately, in text mode the
characters become extremely distorted. Therefore, I've been running
Linux using framebuffer consoles.

However, I checked the refresh rate one time when I did a switch from X
to one of the framebuffer consoles. It turned out to be at 55 Hz, which
isn't supported by my flat screen panel, and I see a distinctive
flicker. This happens about half the time I do a switch from X to
framebuffer console. The other half of the time the refresh rate
stablizes at 60Hz.

I've tried both the Rage 128 and the VESA console, and this effect
occurs with both of them. I'm using Slackware 8, with a 2.4.18 kernel.
Consoles are compiled into the kernel.

Hardware configuration: Pentium III - 667 MHz, 512 MB RAM, ATI
All-In-Wonder Pro 128 with 32MB of memory and Rage 128 Pro chipset.

I'm getting really afraid that the 55 Hz refresh rates will damage my
monitor, so some suggestions would be helpful.
