As many of ya'll know, we plan to have RMS give a lecture for us later this
month(25th). However, a requirement is being listed as a GNU/Linux users group
at gnu.org. That is why we were SIGFree for a while.

Apparently, extending the name to "SIGLinux: The UT ACM's GNU/Linux Users Group"
isn't good enough for Brett(he approves groups for listing). We need a new name.
Maybe... SIGGNU/Linux or SIGGNU, but I think Linux really needs to be in there
for recognition.

So, instead of having this discussion on the list, I'd for like whoever is
interested to join the UT ACM forums(http://www.utacm.org/forums/) and discuss
in the SIGLinux forum under SIGs. The topic is "A GNU name."

Also, we need new tshirts to give the ACM money to support us with. Please
submit tshirt designs on the forum as well under the Tshirt topic. I would
suggest having both a gnu and a penguin or something to that effect.

Thank you,
Jeff

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It seems that there was some
confusion about what, precisely, LUGCOS stood for; particularly, it was
thought that the "LUG" stood for something similar to "Linux
something-beginning-with-u GNU." After getting confused about the initial
confusion (which can take a considerable amount of time -- say, two weeks
;) -- when people involved have a 24-hour ping time on their e-mail
responses), we're working things out with them.

Which brings me back to your situation. I certainly understand your
concerns; it's not much good if you can't promote yourself because people
don't recognize you. This is the precise problem the GNU project faces when
people call the system "Linux." I wear my GNU stickers and my GNU shirt,
but not many people ask me about them because they only recognize
Tux. (Personally, I find a penguin more endearing than a gnu, too, but
there's no reason why both can't share the spotlight. :) )

So the problem you face is very clear. The fact that SIGFree was confused
with FreeBSD only exacerbated matters. However, you had the right idea; you
just came up with a first possibility that had unexpected side effects. So,
I recommend you go in, brainstorm a bit more, and see if you can come up
with something else that should work better.

If you have trouble, let me know; there are enough people working for the
FSF and the GNU project that we ought to be able to come up with a few
ideas of our own.

Thanks for your patience and understanding,

In a very large sense Linux belongs to all of us, and each and every person
who shares it and spreads the word deserves the title of advocate, yourself
included.
