I got around to thinking about my important data on here and decided it would
be best to set up a raid-1 for my home directory. I just can't trust a 2
year old western digital and a IBM 75GXP, what a combination for disaster,
hopefully they won't die at the same time.

Ok, the point of this message, I have raid-1 in software up and working. It
was impressively easy! I have one hard drive and one cdrom on each IDE
channel. Everything is using the fastest possible DMA mode afaik. Is there
anything else I can do to improve RAID-1 performance? So far it seems just
slightly slower than using the 75GXP alone for my home directory. Also, I
have the raid mounted at /mnt/raid1, and in /home, I have a symlink to a
directory on /mnt/raid1. Would this cause a significant performance hit over
mounting the raid on /home instead? I'd like to keep some users on the raid
and some on the single disk if possible.

Thanks,
Patrick
