I am trying Mandrake 9.0 out on my laptop. One of the things that is
frustrating is the long time out on bringing up the networking interfaces.
For example: I have a built in ethernet port and a wireless pcmcia card.
If the network cable is unplugged it takes a long time, around 20 seconds
for the initialization to time out. If the pc card isn't in then I think
it stalls, I haven't had the patience to wait longer than a minute.

My temporary solution has been to modify the startup script to ask which
interfaces I want brought up, not ideal. My question is, first, Is there a
good way to get around this problem? If there isn't, then would it be a
bad idea to put an '&' at the end of the slow commands to put them in the
background?
