  If it's something like jpeg files, a 1GB directory will compress to
about 1.05GB.

  No, that's not a typo.  Most image and many audio formats are already
compressed, so archive compression just adds overhead without reducing
the size at all.

  Read bzip2's man page.  IIRC, it has varying levels of compression.

  Also, run "md5sum <filename> >> listfile.txt" on any really critical
files before you archive them, and archive listfile.txt with them.  If
there's any question of corruption down the road, that's a sure way to
check.
