Question: Does Mandrake 10 render ACPI battery meter and standby enabling? Zac tells me there are solutions to this, of course. You can download the source code for the Linux kernel and recompile it with ACPI support to enable the battery meter and standby. There is a daemon called cpudyn that automatically scales back processor power when the load is low, extending battery life. There are other add-ons that make Linux on a mobile system more usable. But the point is, this solution is non-trivial to implement.
Once Linux on your laptop is set up, you could have an extremely stable, high-performance system with high security. But it might take an expert to set it up. Don't expect to be able to install from a CD and be on your way.
This is based on my experience with a Dell Latitude D600 and Red Hat Linux 9. If someone knows differently, please let us know. I realize this isn't a Linux list, so a post to the linux-laptops list may render more information on this topic. For example, Mandrake or some other distro may include ACPI support and all kinds of bells and whistles. Especially now that the 2.6 kernel is out. But I wouldn't bet on it.
Patrick I would like to reformat ASAP and load either linux or a windows option I have even if it means have to use patches and keep updating my virus software.
