Hm. Did you verify the board with the Java software as a first step? (If you need a hint for building it, have a look at http://peter.stuge.se/spartan-3e-logic-analyzer and if on Gentoo do layman -a stuge && emerge sump-analyzer ) In that app, acquisition is started by clicking, and can run without triggers. I don't know how sigrok handles it, but if you want another data point I'll test your exact sigrok commands with the Spartan board.
