In a word - hardware.

Many of the devices the fpgala firmware could run on have only a UART
interface between the USB interface and the FPGA.

I think Iztok is trying to move towards having a common high level
register interface that works the same over UART, SPI, I2C or any
control bus.

That would be very helpful. Beware though: The protocol will only be
