I'd go this way. If the rest of the protocol is largely the same, it
makes sense to me to have a quirk to fix up the in/out communication and
then proceed as normal.

Why should you be seen as a fool? :) I can easily imagine the
manufacturer broke it. I have seen much worse [1].
