I really recommend to reinstall your Java.
I do not have any of your "strange" problems on Ubuntu 10.10 with
X-1.0rc2.
I installed Java using the UbuntuSoftwareCenter after adding Canonical
Partners (they are in the list). They provide Java version 22 as a GUI
installable package.
