RaiMan proposed the following answer:
key listening currently is not supported on both API levels
(Jython/Python and Java).
It is system dependent and internally only used currently for the 2 hot
keys (capture, abort).
If you want to know how it works and find a way, to use it, you have to
look into the sources.
