Here's the working code for anyone who's interested
def enum(*sequential, **named):
enumDict = dict(zip(sequential, range(len(sequential))), **named)
module = __import__('__builtin__')
value = module.__dict__['type']('Enum', tuple([object]), enumDict)
return value
states = enum('ONE', 'TWO', 'THREE')
