Internally Sikuli uses Java's standard ImageIO.
The file endings it accepts can be listed in a Sikuli script using:
import javax.imageio.ImageIO as ImgIO
for e in list(ImgIO.getReaderFileSuffixes()): print e
printing:
bmp
jpg
wbmp
jpeg
png
gif
