Hey Rafael,
You're using Jython if you're using Sikuli. Jython is just Python in Java, so
in Sikuli-land the names are interchangeable.
In the case of special characters you need to encapsulate them in quotes so
Sikuli knows its a character.
Try type("@") and that should work.
