this works (tested ;-):

    Screen s = new Screen();
    String wdir = System.getProperty("user.dir");
    String bundle = new File(wdir, "images").getAbsolutePath();
    ImageLocator.setBundlePath(bundle);
    System.out.println(s.exists("image.png", 0));
