RaiMan proposed the following answer:
after using
type("c", KEY_CTRL)
the selected text is on the clipboard and can be retrieved from there using
selection = App.getClipboard() # version 1.0.1+
or (deprecated with previous versions)
selection = Env.getClipboard()
after having modified the selection somehow, use
paste(selection)
to write it back to the currently selected GUI element.
