RaiMan proposed the following answer:
I do not know, how secure the Firefox password store is, but with Safari at
least on Mac the store only reveals the stored passwords in the settings, when
you enter the admin password.
The auto-fill on a page works just by focusing the username field and then
selecting the appropriate credentials from the popup.
The password is not revealed at any time during this process.
