RaiMan proposed the following answer:
With version 1.1.0 you at least have the feature:
App.isRunning()
... but it will never be a feature of SikuliX, to provide more
information about causes for app crashes.
using run() would only be a choice, if the app provides crash
information to stdout (so try it on command line before)
