ok, that is HTML behaviour: multiple blanks are collapsed to one blank.
Sorry, did not realise it.
so:
newItems = ["<html><font face='monospaced'>" + item.replace(" ", " ") for
item in items]
the HTML-constant will be respected and finally result in a
blank.
