I received this today from the weekly Slattery's Watch <
[email protected]> and thought it would be of interest to
SiliconBeachers given recent conversations on bootstrap funding ideas. I
have CCed Rachel just in case she was not on the SB list.

Dear David

I don't like to get too political in our humble weekly newsletter. But I am
concerned about how long we are going to wait before Senator Carr (or the
government) does anything (or says anything interesting) in relation to
innovation. We started last year with an innovation review. Handed in with
lots of fanfare mid-year, they originally promised us the government's
response to the review by Christmas. And then? Silence!

Innovation is the key to moving Australia into a better position. Tough
times can provide a great chance for creativity, for doing things
differently, for using our imagination. The current financial environment
will delay the commercialisation of some innovations, but it may also lead
to an increase in innovation and an injection of entrepreneurial spirit – if
history is any guide. If the government doesn't want to be involved, they
should at least say so. Why pretend they are passionate about innovation if
they cannot decide in a year what to do about it? Senator Carr's office told
me on Friday that they have no idea when we will receive a response to the
innovation review, let alone an innovation policy! Maybe an innovative
response to the current economic environment would be to do something
innovative – like back innovation!

Good to see the ACS and Software Queensland come out late last week with
statements on this issue.

Below is this week's Watch.

Best Wishes
Rachel Slattery
