2) Summary: The next generation of data processing

Name: Drew Turney Sydney Morning Herald

Category: High Tech

Email: [email protected]

Media Outlet: Sydney Morning Herald

Deadline: 7:00 PM EST - 21 December

Query:

Researchers working with dielectrics say their results might
mean devices that work 10 thousand times faster than a 100 GHz
transistor. I've been asked to do a story on where that could
lead, from the applications to the limitations (if any).

Obviously its a fundamentally good thing and nobody would
suggest putting the brakes on such advances, but I've ben told
before by experts in several sectors that nowadays the problem
isn't data processing itself but systems to further process the
data we get out of so much information (for example, software
can now distil a worldwide trend just by collecting and
assessing twitter hashtags fairly quickly, but who or what has
the semantic ability to give meaning to the results?)

Otherwise, what kind of world would processors 10,000 times
faster than those today give us?

I'd like three perspectives;

* academic with no business interests to comment on the science

* a software company along the lines of Google or Facebook that
has a lot of processing to do who can comment on how it will
change their business

* someone connected to manufacturing who can talk about the
practical considerations to take into account.

Requirements:

I need input from the academic, software and hardware sectors
