I keep nearly unlurking given how intersting topics are at times so it's about time I actually do!
I've pondered this question a fair bit too, in a context similar to the one you describe. How do you avoid a pointless conversation with someone who seems dogmatically caught in a troublesome alter-reality? From there I went to ask: how do you sensible question if you youself are in the troublesome alter-reality? Where I got to was you explore with the question you asked. Specially I ask: what, if anything, might lead to your changing your mind? Because even just getting stuck on that is actually a useful intervention. Most people dogmatically attached to a world view are not present to them twisting information and discussion to defend and reinforce that view. It's just about possible that refusing argue on the world view unless there's openness to change it will be a win even if all it does is create a sliver of insight into their unwillingness to review their opinion regardless of what comes up. I've even mused once about a chat app (not necessarily AI!) that let's people "safely" challenge their beliefs to at least understand where it's dogma. I feel it's just possible one could build something that lets people with that sliver of doubt to find a way back to a less rigid entrenched position.
