Hello friends, old and new. If I remember correctly, Udhay first invited me to Silklist in 2008, around the time that I wrote an essay about *Christopher Kelty's Two Bits: The cultural significance of free software, *in which Udhay and the list are mentioned.
Over the years I mostly lurked, although I have chimed in at random intervals. Then, about 4 years ago, the email address I had used for the list became misconfigured somehow and I decided to not bother to resurrect it because it had become overrun with spam, and so I fell off the list. I'm happy that as of today I'm again a member (with a different email addy!). I'm a 72 year old USian novelist & essayist. For the last 30 years I've resided on the island of Martha's Vineyard, in Massachusetts, although I've sometimes taken lodgings elsewhere for work. My first job in 'tech' was at Data General in 1980, and since then I've been a technical writer, manager of writers and manager of software engineering at ~20 places, mostly startups (Silicon Valley/San Francisco, Boston/Cambridge, NYC, etc.) I've also been a firefighter, construction worker, long-haul truck driver and random other things. I post a couple of essays/month, many of them touching on the intersection of science, technology & society, on my substack* Sundman figures it out!* https://johnsundman.substack.com/ I look forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Kind regards, jrs
