Gotta love Orlowski...several interesting observations there.
Everyone I've spoken with who attended Web 2.0 this year said it was
an almost frenetically buzzing conference that somehow made one
simultaneously elated and uncomfortable (which I think Orlowski
captures well in this piece).
I need to clarify on the quotation of my earlier comments, reprinted
below...I'm not saying its a bad thing for O'Reilly or anyone to
pursue money once in awhile, and I think O'Reilly folks in particular
are refreshingly upfront about their motivations. If anything, I was
acting as apologist to excuse them for their part in creating the Web
2.0 that I experienced last year.
I'm sure some good came out of all the buzz at Web 2.0 2005. The
industry can't "recover" without some unbridled optimism and self-
congratulation returning as well, and actually its that optimism that
seems to convince those with ideas to take a risk and start a
company, so its all part of the dance.
