Maybe this is an example of the Value of Moment Generating Functions?

The US may only appear to be an outlier because of its wide disparities. Intra-US, it would be fair to say that affluence reduces nationalism and religiosity -- but as the affluence is pretty concentrated, it's easy to find both a high mean level of affluence, and a high modal level of nationalism and religiosity.
