If you are not looking at buying a camera body with a basic lens, and adding
other lenses to the collection over time, and upgrading to a better body at a
later, date - I'd suggest a fixed lens portable camera like the Canon A620, or
Canon A700. Both of them are 6MP plus cameras, use AA batteries or NiMH
rechargables, and the A700 has a 35-210mm lens, which can extend further if
you use accessories. You should be able to get either of them for US $300.
They are also pretty good at macro and can focus as close as 1cm.
