The chief feuding religions are Canonism and Nikonism.

I’m one of the former. And I’ll recommend the Canon EOS Digital (it might be called the Rebel XT there) that will come with a pretty good lens (18 – 55 mm that’s equivalent to something like 28mm – 85mm on a 35 mil camera) standard – all within US$ 800 or so. The back does 8 megapixels – more than enough for everybody but those who blow everything up to 3-foot size prints. The optics are great and in Canon tradition, the follow-on lenses you’ll end up buying later: telephoto / wide angle etc are great quality and fairly priced.

In the interests of secularism, there’s also a new Nikon – the D50 that does about the same thing at about the same price. Additional Nikon lenses usually tend to cost more, and there’s no reported perceptible difference in image quality between the two.

My $0.02

Subject: [silk] yet another camera query

hi,
there have been many interesting camera related discussions here on silk. the equipments discussed there were however all way above my budget.
My budget is 35 to 40 K Indian rupees.
what is the best camera that one can get with that? A friend is visiting america, so i am requesting him to pick one up for me from there.
thanks,
Abhishek
