If I may be so presumptuous as to ask - what does one do with a $5000 lens? I
mean what can one do with that you can't do with a $500 lens. I honestly
don't know.

Its like saying why macbookpro when you can use that 486 machine in the corner suit all your needs ;)

I'm basically paying for the large aperture, excellent quality optics and VR. I started with a $100 zoom lens and then jumped on to a $1500 zoom. I never looked back and I wish I had jumped earlier because I missed many photographs which I could have gotten with the new lens.

Now I'm pumping in $5000 for one of the best tele-photo lenses in the world. If there are 100 photographers shooting a single bird.. the chances are that I'll walk away with the best photographs of the lot. I'm planning on lot of expeditions this year and I do not want to miss a thing because I have a lousy lens.

You might think I'm crazy to blow up $5000 on a piece of glass, but its about priorities. I rather get this lens rather than upgrade my decade old Maruthi 800 car :)
