The thing about articles on this theme - whether it is India Shining (or
Un-shining) is that they mostly tend to have an idea that they set out to
prove and they cherry pick facts which support that. The two most common
lines of argument are India Shining v India not-shining.

Neither is entirely right and neither is entirely wrong - but they tend to
talk past each other a lot - this Pankaj Mishra article is in the latter
school, but the way it blithely dismisses the changes of the last 15 years
in India is as suspect as the India Shining articles which tout only the
positives..

The most balanced picture I tend to find is usually in The Economist,
which paints a picture of (very) cautious optimism, which is an attitude I
share..
