With "safe riding habits" (and that includes proper gear), you should
be able to get by with just a scrape out of more accidents than you
think, out in North America while on a motorcycle.

This obviously assumes that the rider is skilled, or at any rate, is
able to judge his skill level to a fair level of accuracy and ride
accordingly ... unless you're doing something really bizarre, I'd say
that moto-riding in North America is actually "pretty safe" (i.e. it
meets my minimum safety requirements)
