I think binary does very well even on the lunatic fringe.
The smallest parcels are photons and electrons (SET, a charge
bucket), where presence or absence is crucial, and in spintronics 
spin up or down. Otoh, in the very short temporal and small spatial
domains digital and analog tend to become one.
