umm- at the risk of being politically incorrect, I think that Islam is an 
offshoot of Christianity rather than both being branches of some other trunk 
(eg Judaism).

Islam is, after all, 600 years younger and that argument is actually used to 
bolster the statement that Islam is the final update downloaded from God, 
with Mohammad being the last and final Prophet.
